The following pictures represent a payroll model for a typical store in a large retail chain. This model was built by dividing the store into six zones, and then calculating the most efficient and effective labor assignment for each level of sales activity. The result was a 9% reduction in payroll costs and a 3% increase in sales. As tables of numbers, the model did not make sense to operating management. When presented graphically, the concepts were easily grasped and implemented.
